Abstrakt: The article is dealing with the problem of spending of the free time within the very special environment — a labour corps. In the view of the significant task that a labour corps face — to prepare the youth to live among people — this process should be preceded with scientific research. And as far now, although the Voluntary Labour Corps were established nearly 25 years ago, only a few studies have been published. The article is a contribution to the general analysis of methods forms and conditions of the educational work that is carried on within corps. The research was carried on among females. It has some meaning because of severe scarcity of literature dealing with this social group — and accordingly the inability of working out the effective educational methods. The article presents the results of the empirical research carried on among the girls from the corps associated within the building works in Tychy. The corps is the only female labour corps in the Katowice voivodeship. (It consists of 55 girls aged of 16—¡22 learning at Elementary Building School). The study was mostly dealing with general problems: environmental conditions of the girls before joining the corps and their influence on spending of the free time during the stay in the Voluntary Labour Corps. The analysis of presence of the girls at additional classes and private interests of this group was also done. Some attention was paid to the fact that the free time of the youth considered should perform very important tasks: to let the girls to rest after school and work, on the one hand, and to help them to fill the gaps in their general (mostly cultural and aesthetical) education on the other one. It was assumed that the girls starting their wonk in a labour corps do not have any knowledge of rational spending of the free time. This fact is the consequence of the low general culture of the families that they come from and that are not a proper educational environment. It was also assumed that a labour corps carrying on its educational activities may affect the development of interests and a change of girls attitudes towards their work,, education and life within the group. The article tries to demonstrate the relations between social origin, a place of permanent stay, a structure of families and education of parents on the one hand and the development of interests and the girls’ skill of rational spending of the free time on the other one. The large and wasted opportunities of the corps’ influence on that matters mostly through cultural and educational activities are stressed. The article considers the reasons of ineffectiveness and incommensurability of that work. The presented study should give important arguments for widening of the educational and cultural work as well as for better organization of free time. There are wide possibilities to prepare in that way the members of Voluntary Labour Corps to their future valuable social lives. The authors suggest that especially in the case of this youth there is the necessity of employment of a cultural and educational worker stimulating the development of different forms of spending of free time; his work being based upon personal engagement and not on obtaining detailed tasks. In the view of discussions led in socio-pedagogical publications in many countries especially in France, the United States, Belgium and Canada concerning social, educational and cultural animation the authors point the proffesion called „animator”. They think that the possibility of employment in the Voluntary Labour Corps sued a social qualities (a good psychologist and an organizer having attitude for initiative and some sense of humour etc.) should be considered in future.
